Are You Losing Your Edge as an HOA Board Member?

=================================================================

We’re providing the tools for you to do an honest self-assessment in this week’s tip.

Maybe you’ve served on your board for years, for all kinds of reasons. You like having input on how your community is managed. You’re good at something—maybe it’s management, financial issues, or something else—and it helps the community for you to share your expertise.

Or maybe not many other people you believe would do a solid job have stepped up.

Despite all that, it’s important for you to occasionally check in with yourself to determine whether you’re showing signs of burnout. It’s a very big problem among condo and HOA board members. When it creeps up on you, it can make you less effective as a board member—and that can lead to costly mistakes.

Here are two of seven questions our experts suggest that you ask yourself to assess whether you’re still performing well as a board member or whether it’s time for you to take a break and let someone else step up to the plate.

1. Am I finding excuses to miss meetings? “When I see signs of burnout, I see that board members stop showing up at meetings,” says Barbara Holland, CPM, regional manager for FirstService Residential in Las Vegas. “They have all sorts of excuses, but they just don’t come to meetings.”

2. Do I stall in responding to routine communications? Holland also says she sees burned-out board members develop a pattern of failing to respond to her emails and phone calls.

Executive sessions are an important tool to help you accomplish that goal. However, many board members are confused about when, why, and how to meet in executive session.
