Goats Can Reduce Your HOA’s Fire Risk (And They’re Sort of Fun)

=================================================================

In this week’s tip, we explain why it might be wise for you to consider
allowing goats to parade around your property.

A growing number of HOAs are actually using goats to clear vegetation in
their property.

“We’re seeing more and more HOAs doing this,” says Terri Oyarzun, owner and
goat mom, as she calls herself, at Goats R Us in Orinda, Calif. “In Northern
California, wildfires are so rampant that more people are being required to
manage their open spaces. Now fire departments are saying, ‘If you own this
canyon down here, you’re going to be responsible if the neighbor’s home goes
up in flames.’ You need to be thinking of how you’re handling that.”

Why use goats to clear vegetation? Because it’s environmentally friendly.

“It respects the whole green element,” says Oyarzun. “There are no poisons,
there’s not a lot of machinery, and it’s popular. People like to look out
their back window and see the goats.”

Oyarzun says she has “quite a few” condo and HOA clients. Whether a condo or
HOA is a good fit for her service depends on the association’s grounds.

“It depends on how much open space those associations own,” she says. “If
they have enough open space that makes it practical to bring in a herd of
goats, that’s what we do. Small spaces benefit more from getting a landscape
company. But some of the larger and more prestigious community
associations use us annually because it’s a green alternative. It’s an
environmentally friendly way to take care of their vegetation-management
needs.”

Oyarzun says HOAs typically hire her goats annually. “What the goats do is
come in and eat the weeds,” she says. “Obviously, everyone tries to time that
so the weeds are getting eaten as they’re drying out but before they go to
seed. Once the weed problem is gone, there’s not a lot of need for another time
to come out unless there’s regrowth.”

Is your property a good fit for Billy and his buddies? If so, how many goats
will you need? And what will you pay for the pleasure of hosting a goat fest?

In this week's tip, we discuss whether you have to go through the motions of an
