Live, from Your HOA! It’s a Board Meeting!

=================================================================

Sometimes it seems like Facebook Live is taking over the world.

OK, we’re joking. (Sort of. Check out our Facebook page.)

Seriously, though, in this week’s tip, we discuss whether can you use that platform or another live platform to stream your meetings? Why do it? Can it help your community? What can go wrong?

The idea of allowing live viewing of HOA meetings has a certain appeal.

In Minnesota, where many residents skip town during the winter, this might be a good way to keep owners engaged and informed. “This is becoming a bit more of a topic,” says Matthew A. Drewes, a shareholder at DeWitt Mackall Crounse & Moore S.C. in Minneapolis.

“For a number of years, especially in the corporate world, the need has been for director groups spread across geographic areas to have more connections,” notes Drewes. “Those features are starting to find their way into the community association realm, especially with the possibility that a segment of the population might go south for the winter. There might be monthly meetings, and an annual meeting may take place when a substantial number of members might have left the area.

“The ability to live stream the meeting is a good option to explore even if it’s not for the purpose of allowing the people viewing to participate, just to observe,” advises Drewes. “In Minnesota, boards aren’t obligated to allow members to speak at board meetings, though many do. So allowing the live streaming—even if it doesn’t allow for real-time feedback during the meeting—allows members the opportunity to observe what’s going on at the meeting. It could be a benefit.

“If you can do it under your state statutes and it’s authorized by your governing documents—or if you can authorize it with an easy amendment—it could be helpful even for the mere purpose of obtaining a quorum,” concludes Drewes.

But the practice does have its detractors, which you can read about in our new article: https://www.hoaleader.com/members/3616.cfm

The Lessons of Harvey, Irma, and Wildfires, Even If Your HOA Was Unscathed

Our hearts have been and still are with our readers who were affected by disasters in the past two months. To recap, in late August, hundreds of thousands of Texas residents were swamped by disastrous rain and flooding from Hurricane Harvey. Then hurricanes Irma and Maria hit residents in Florida, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands (among others). And while those disasters were making life miserable--and dangerous--for those in their way, wildfires in California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Montana, Utah, and Washington were menacing those states' residents.
