Experts Advise Against Using NextDoor for Condo/HOA Business

=================================================================

In case you missed it, in this week’s tip, we’re explaining a warning from our panelists in the March HOAleader.com webinar on the good and bad of social media for HOAs.

The advice from community association experts and panelists Melissa Garcia and Elizabeth White? Don’t engage on NextDoor.

It’s gaining traction in the condo and HOA world, but Garcia and White recommend their board and association clients don’t participate.

“It’s really just exploded in Colorado,” reports Garcia, a partner at Hindman Sanchez, a law firm in Arvada, Colo., with about 1,600 association clients. “It’s interesting what I hear from a number of my clients.

“I think overwhelmingly here there’s a negative response to NextDoor because what we’re seeing is a sort of board bashing or manager bashing that occurs on NextDoor,” states Garcia. “It’s one of the sites where, if you’re in a particular community, you can connect with other neighbors in your community and then post things that are supposed to be of common interest within the neighborhood.

“What we’re seeing a lot here is that it’s complaints—not really communication or any positive communication—just complaints and bashing,” states Garcia. “My recommendation to my boards is not to engage in that because you have your own methods to promote and control the information you want to send out through your own methods, such as your own social media page and your own website.”

There are two risks to board members using NextDoor as an association communications vehicle, according to Garcia. Find out more in our new article: https://www.hoaleader.com/members/3726.cfm

Condo Deconversions Gain More Steam in Illinois

In this week's tip, our veteran writer Gabriella Filisko admits to learning something new. "Imagine my surprise, as a writer about community associations, to hear that her neighbor's 49-unit north-side Chicago condo building had been approached about being bought out, with the new owner turning the units into rentals," she writes. The owners approved the sale, and the building is no longer a condo association.

Apps Aren't Taking Over the Condo/HOA World (But One Condo Manager Loves His!)

SPECIAL REPORT DOWNLOAD:
What HOA and Condo Boards Need to Know About Regulating Rentals

Rental restrictions are unlike most other policies HOA boards create because they necessarily curb owners' real property rights. The law jealously protects property owners' rights, which means any HOA board that seeks to restrict rentals in their community needs to act wisely and deliberately.

This report provides you with the information you need to achieve that goal.
