How Your Condo/HOA Can Help the Country Become a No-Kill Animal Zone

=================================================================

In this week's tip, we explain how you could help keep animals from being dropped at shelters, where most don't make it out alive.

The topic arises because we found Best Friends Animal Society—which has a goal to make the nation a no-kill zone by 2025—recently hosting a booth at a conference for community association lawyers. a What? Animal rescue and community association lawyers don't typically come together. It did there because Best Friends was providing resources for the boards those lawyers serve on how to develop pet policies that work for both owners and the community association.

"It takes a community to reach our no-kill goal by 2025," says Akisha Townsend Eaton, a Bowling Green, Ky.-based legislative attorney with the organization, which is based in Kanab, Utah. "A lot of times, the number-one reason people give up their dogs and cats to shelters is that they can't bring them into their home. Their housing isn't pet friendly.

"That often involves renters, but other times it's HOAs and other communities, too, that have restrictions," she adds. "We reach out to provide resources on creating pet-friendly policies and to highlight the value to community associations that being pet friendly can bring. Those benefits include making those communities more profitable and more attractive."

How does permitting pets make communities more profitable? "We know that 62 percent of American households have pets, and 95 percent of those consider their pets to be part of the family," asserts Townsend Eaton. "Once pet-friendly housing is secured, those families tend to stay longer in the community so they don't have to go through the process of finding another pet-friendly home.

"Also, we're hearing more and more real estate agents saying they're making this a sales category to make this more attractive to buyers," she adds. "Some agents even specialize in finding pet-friendly housing."

If you're thinking that's all nice, but pets are perpetrators of damage and other problems, Townsend Eaton has evidence to the contrary. "In terms of renters, research show that more than 90 percent of them don't lose their pet deposit," she asserts.

Townsend Eaton says her organization is seeing a number of trends across the country. Read about them—and get Best Friends' best practices for pet policies—in our new article: https://www.hoaleader.com/members/3885.cfm
