Mayer earned his law degree from St.
Thomas University School of Law. He worked as an assistant public defender in Miami and then at the office's appellate division. In 2009, Mayer became a coach for the St. Thomas trial team, leading the team to state and national championship wins in his first year. In 2013, he received the school's award for adjunct professor of the year.
